Redesign of the Sternglas Tachymeter: a bold 44 mm chronograph inspired by vintage rally aesthetics, combining Seiko meca-quartz precision with upgraded specs, a new dial, and engraved case backs.

Tachymeter 2.0 – A Full-Throttle Redesign

With the Tachymeter 2.0, I set out to completely redesign one of our existing chronographs at Sternglas, elevating it in every dimension. The goal was not just to improve isolated elements but to create a cohesive and impactful evolution that brings together performance, aesthetics, and emotion.

At the core of this new design is a completely re-engineered case with a bold 44 millimeter diameter. It is the largest timepiece in our collection to date and now features 100 meters of water resistance. The double-domed sapphire crystal enhances durability while giving the watch a strong presence on the wrist.

Inside, the Seiko VK63 meca-quartz movement delivers a hybrid of mechanical character and quartz precision. Tactile pushers, a fine-tuned tachymeter bezel, and the centrally mounted chronograph hand create an authentic motorsport feel.

The dial was inspired by classic rally car dashboards from the 1970s and 1980s. It was important to me to capture that dynamic tension between technical function and visual energy. The multi-layered structure, paired with vivid red or yellow accents, enhances legibility and adds a sense of speed and power. Luminova on the dial and hands ensures optimal readability in low-light conditions.

On the reverse side, the case back features two engraved illustrations inspired by rally racing—one capturing a steep uphill climb, the other a fast descent through snowy mountain passes. For the first time in my design process, I integrated AI tools to explore new creative directions for these engravings, blending tradition with innovation.

The watch comes with an integrated "Beads of Rice" metal bracelet that underscores its vintage character. Thanks to the quick-release system, it can easily be paired with leather or rubber straps to match different moods and occasions.

For me as a designer, the Tachymeter 2.0 represents a milestone in our collection. It brings together engineering, storytelling, and design discipline into a single watch that speaks to those who appreciate precision, presence, and performance on the wrist.
